This comprehensive edition, based on a prestigious Dutch collection, traces the development of block letters by means of exceptionally beautiful catalogs. It shows type samples in lean, italic, bold, semi-bold, narrow and wide fonts. Borders, ornaments, initials and decorations as well as exemplary lithographs, letters by sign painters, inscription carvers and calligraphers are also included.

The first part presents typefaces from the period before the 20th century and contains essays by the editor Cees de Jong and the collector Jan Tholenaar. The second part covers the period from 1900 to the middle of the 20th century and contains a historical outline by Alston W. Purvis. With works by type designers such as William Caslon, Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke, Peter Behrens, Rudolf Koch, Eric Gill, Jan van Krimpen, Paul Renner, Jan Tschichold, A. M. Cassandre, Aldo Novarese and Adrian Frutiger.
