Straight Outta Amsterdam: The Patta Story
For Patta founders Edson Sabajo and Guillaume "Gee" Schmidt, street fashion is part of the air they breathe: In the late 90s to early 2000s, both shaped the hip-hop culture of the Dutch capital - Edson as DJ, Gee as MC and event host. Their penchant for good music and the best sneakers was therefore not just a hobby, but part of their identity. In 2004, the kick-collectors turned their passion into a profession: the first Patta store opened its doors in Amsterdam.
At first Edson and Gee sold in their Patta Shop selected sneakers from their friends' brands or globally renowned companies. In 2010, the first own collection followed - and Patta became a brand. Today, the brand's offering includes a permanent clothing line with Patta pants, shirts and jackets as well as two seasonal collections.
What was always important to the two founders, however, is the connection to the community: Under the name "Patta Soundsystem", the company operates a music platform and a creative network. In addition, there is the Patta Running Team and the Patta Foundation, which focuses on educating young people. At the same time, Edson and Gee can use the brand to pass on their cultural heritage: In Suriname, the Latin American country of origin of the founders, "Patta" is the slang expression for "shoe. Patta is now one of the most successful black-owned apparel brands in international business.
