The beginning of the 90s were the Hay Days of Tinker Hatfield. With the Nike Air Max 90 (1990) and the Nike Air 180 (1991), the design legend launched two silhouettes in quick succession that were an instant hit and are still among the most popular models in the sneaker game today. Hatfield also penned the Nike Air Max BW, which saw the light of the sneaker world in 1991, too. The shoe, which received the nickname "BW" aka "Big Window" due to its enlarged Air Window compared to the Air Max 90, was initially overshadowed by its two successful "brothers". After the 180 was promoted with an elaborate campaign, only little marketing budget remained for the BW and the model threatened to disappear into oblivion.

Grime and Gabber scene help the Nike Air Max BW to success

Thanks to a special music scene of the 90s, however, the Nike Air Max BW came to its well-deserved fame: the Gabber subculture. Especially popular in the Netherlands, this techno variant moves at rapid speeds between 140 and 190bpm. Among the Gabbers, as the followers of the scene called themselves, the Nike Air Max BW was often combined with bomber jackets and colorful tracksuits.

In the early 2000s, the Nike Air Max BW then found great favor in the flourishing grime scene, not least thanks to the cover of Dizzee Rascal's debut album "Boy in da Corner" - for many the decisive milestone that got the grime movement going. On the spartanic cover, Dizzee Rascal wears an Air Max BW, which is particularly eye-catching due to the reduced colors and high contrasts. The famous shot earned Dizzee Rascal several Nike collabs like the Air Max 180 Dirtee Stank or the Air Max 90 Tongue N'Cheek. The Air Max or BW theme continues to play a central role in recent Grime history as well, such as Skepta's acclaimed Nike Air Max 97/BW SK.
