Today we're excited to present the release of a shoe that's been "to the top", Mt. Everest to be exact. Originally developed in the early 1980s with renowned mountaineer Lou Whittaker, the New Balance HL710 Rainier was launched in 1982. Whittaker's team had the shoe on their feet during the first American ascent of the world's highest mountain.

The Rainier was a groundbreaking success in the outdoor industry, which until then had known rather clunky and heavy boots. New Balance managed to combine stability, a non-slip sole, flexibility and surefootedness in a slim and lightweight silhouette! On top of that, the shoe simply looked fresh!

Back in 2016, a retro of the Rainier came out, featuring outdoor fashion experts Norse Projects, among others. Now, a brand more known for the New York fashion scene than the mountain world has just made the collabo serve for a retro comeback: Fashion Label Aimé Leon Dore, known not least for founder Teddy Santis, who is now creative director for the "Made in USA" division, has just launched three sleek collabo colorways.

But now the OG is back - in the classic Glazed Ginger / Dark Denim colorway. In terms of its mountaineering performance, there are certainly more modern versions in 2023, but the Rainier still bridges the gap between "well-dressed" hiking shoe and chic street version. The Rainier OG's upper comes in an outdoorsy mix of smooth leather and Cordura, the solid hiking eyelets make it easy to get in and out of the shoe, and the hiking sole stands up to rough surfaces.
