New at asphaltgold: Hoka One One
In 2009, Frenchmen Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Dirad wanted to develop a running shoe that could cope with the technically demanding trails of the southern Alps, Pyrenees and Dolomites - especially steep downhill trails. Both had gained the necessary experience during their time at Salomon. Hoka One One was born. The unusual name is derived from a Maori proverb and means something like "flying over the earth." That's exactly how running in Hoka One One shoes should feel. Meanwhile, the French are part of California-based Dekker Brands, which is also home to other well-known brands like Teva and UGG.
Maximalist Look - Minimal Weight
From Day 1, the goal was to achieve the feeling of flying through voluminous outsoles and the greatest possible cushioning - in an era of minimalism: ambitious. Nevertheless, the two founders quickly attracted the attention of ultrarunners in particular, who sometimes cover far more than 60 kilometers at a stretch in ultramarathons.
Today, the brand is one of the most popular brands in the trail and ultra-running segment, but is also increasingly playing a role in the streetwear and sneaker segment - not least thanks to the local advance of hiking and outdoor styles and the trends of Asian metropolises. In particular, the Bondi B, the Clifton and the Tor Ultra are now popular silhouettes off the hiking trails as well. The latter impresses with a slip-resistant Vibram sole, a waterproof Skyshell membrane and a midsole made of CMEVA foam, which provides both comfort and maximum cushioning.

From the trails to the runway
For a special moment that gave Hoka One One momentum, none other than Kanye West was responsible: he was spotted wearing the Tor Ultra Hi 2 Hiking Boot in the spring, which received great coverage from fashion and lifestyle media. This year also saw the release of collaborations with notable partners such as Engineered Garments and Outdoor Voices.
