While the market leaders in the running shoe sector were constantly trying to outdo each other in technical innovations at the end of the 80s, Onitsuka in Japan developed its very own idea of how a running shoe should look and perform. The foundation stone was laid in 1986 with the first Gel damping, which was used in the Asics GT-II. Over the years, a series was created that culminated in 1990 in the form of the Asics Gel-Lyte III. Compared to its predecessors, the Gel-Lyte III incorporated all of Asics' tried and tested achievements, such as the triple compression molded EVA midsole, Asics Gel cushioning and last but not least, the split tongue. This feature not only ensured an optimal fit, but also visually set the shoe apart from its competitors. Coupled with the classic colorways of its time, the shoe quickly established itself in the running sector, but was also increasingly discovered by hip hop culture and rocked on the street. In 2007, the Gel-Lyte III experienced its first colab with the Dutch sneaker store Patta, so that a success story took its course and the fan base thus became ever larger. 25 years after the first release, Asics celebrates a fitting anniversary by collaborating with shops from all over the world and thus also celebrating the global importance of this classic.
