Puma Clyde: Retro chic with history
Anyone who knows about sneakers knows that many of the most iconic models started their careers as style icons on the sports field. The Puma Clyde was no different when it was launched as a basketball shoe in 1973. The starting point for the look was Herzogenaurach, Germany: Puma contacted the then basketball pro Walt Frazier, who was shooting baskets for the New York Knicks at the time - the perfect player to promote a new Puma leather shoe for athletes.
Frazier, nicknamed "Clyde" - based on the character Clyde Barrow from the cinema classic "Bonnie and Clyde" - agreed. As a true fashionista, however, Frazier made three conditions:
1. He wanted to release the first low-top basketball shoe with a suede instead of leather upper.
2. His signature “Clyde” should adorn every shoe.
3. For every NBA game he played in, a new colorway was needed.
One of the best decisions in sneaker history: Puma agreed.
