Founded in 1908 by Marques Mills Converse in Malden, Massachusetts as the Converse Rubber Shoe Company, the company initially concentrated on the production of winter-proof footwear and vulcanised rubber tyres. The need for athletic footwear was immense, so in 1921 they began working with basketball player Chuck Taylor. Together they designed a new type of shoe, which was launched in 1923, and which we know today as the Chuck Taylor All Star. Since then, the shoe model is often just called "Chucks".
